Top 3 BYOD Challenges and Solutions for Small Business

Bring your own device (BYOD) is a business policy of employees bringing personally owned mobile devices to their place of work and using those devices to access privileged company resources such as email, file servers and databases as well as their personal applications and data (Wikipedia)
Mobile technology and BYOD has undeniably become integral in countless workplaces these days. Numerous people believe that mobile device use is critical for them to complete their tasks, while others think that it adds to their competitiveness. Due to its portability and convenience, mobile device use has improved communication and collaboration between those who are in the office and those in the field, increased accessibility to clients or customers, and enhanced employee productivity. BYOD is definitely something companies can no longer ignore. Though this new technology has produced several advantages, it has also generated new vulnerabilities that small businesses should look out for.
Here are the top 3 most common BYOD challenges along with the possible solutions:
Challenge 1: Mobile devices are susceptible to loss and theft. Losing a mobile device is often worse than losing a wallet especially if you have confidential data stored in it.
Solutions:
• Password-protect your device and set it to auto-lock after a specified period of time.
• Take advantage of unlock options, including a numeric PIN, a password or a graphical pattern.
• Install an app that can trigger an alarm to help you find your mobile device if you've misplaced it. Apps that can remotely lock and wipe a stolen or lost device are also available.
• Employees should be advised to regularly backup data stored in their mobile devices such as contacts, photos, notes and other important information.
Challenge 2: Protecting mobile devices from malware and viruses. The burden of having to continuously monitor these devices and people's behavior can be heavy. An infected device can compromise the entire network especially if the same device is used to access the network.
Solutions:
• Employee awareness and training.
• Create an acceptable use policy.
• Set clear guidelines regarding what sort of company data employees are allowed to

Will Android 4.2 Bring Android Front And Center In The Tablet Market?

With Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) inevitably making its way to tablets soon, I think about it's potentially to bring Android forward in the tablet space. I honestly find Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) somewhat lacking, and I'm not a huge fan of the garish interface; though thankfully Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) is fixing that one.
I think it will breathe new life into the Android tablet. It will make the tablet a lot more accessible to the average person as well as bring a huge amount of apps to the tablets which previously have been lacking. It has worked for Apple to I don't see why it won't work for Android, really looking forward to the release!
My main concern when it comes to Android tablets is that they want every phone app to run on tablets, which is understandable, but I don't think that really adds any value.
There should be some way to make it so you can see which apps are specifically made for tablets sort of like the way Apple does it for iOS, as for if Android will be left in the dust? I hope so but realistically I can't see that happening, as long as it's a major phone OS it'll continue to be popular on tablets. All they need is a checkbox for the developers to mark whether or not it's built with a tablet interface and they're done. It is just that kind of simple database stuff. I think if they added a 'upgraded for tablets' tag or something so users could differentiate which apps have been created to work on both tablets and phones it would make Android on a tablet a much better experience.
I'm curious as to why Google hasn't shown Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) on any tablets yet (no screenshots, and as far as I'm aware they haven't talked about if/ how it works different from Android 4.1 for phones). As far as apps go, after watching the video of Android 4.1 Tablet and Nexus 4 made by someone, it almost seemed to me he was denying any difference between tablet and phone apps, unless he was talking solely about the technical aspects of it not UI, that concerns me. Ultimately, I think Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) will provide a small augmentation in tablet growth but nothing extraordinary...
I cannot wait for an Android 4.2 rom for my Android 4.1 tablet. It should run decently well with the overclocked kernels that the community has created

Why Go To An iPhone Repair Shop

When it comes to iPhone repairs, one has several options to choose from. You can take your damaged iPhone to an Apple store, try fixing the damage yourself, or you can choose to go to a good iPhone repair shop. It is better if you get yourself aware of the benefits of going to an iPhone repair shop.
A damaged iPhone, or any other smart phone, is no good if the damage is severe. You certainly won't want getting your smart phone damaged right after you have bought it. But, if you have gotten it damaged somehow, you tend to look for solutions that are comparatively economical and cheaper.
There can be several problems that might arise in your iPhone that need professional handling. The most common way people get their iPhone damaged is by dropping them. This can have very damaging effects on your smart phone. It can even shatter the screen. A shattered screen leaves your iPhone almost useless.
Not only an iPhone, but your iPad screen can also face same consequences if dropped. Several iPhone repair shops also deal with other Apple products. An iPad screen replacement can be easily handled by a good technician. Cracking the screen is not the only way in which you can get your iPhone damaged. Imagine the damaged caused if you drop your smart phone in water. A good professional can fix this problem as well.
Going for an Apple store can be very costly, but if you have the original purchase receipt and a warranty that can be availed, then it's no issue. Still, waiting at an Apple store for your turn to come can become quite tiring and repulsive. So, why not go for an iPhone repair shop instead? The service is quick and you get the same quality work done at a cheaper rate.
It is often advised that you do not try to fix iPhone damages yourself, unless you are a professional or you have the required skills. Your one single mistake can leave your device useless or can cause further damage. By carrying out the repair yourself, you may create more problems and end up losing more money than before.
So, whether it is getting your iPhone screen fixed, going for an iPhone casing color conversion or getting an iPad screen replacement, choosing an iPhone repair shop over other options can be very beneficial for you, especially when getting economy and efficiency are your priorities

Mobile Application Development Tutorial

It is very easy to see the opportunity involved with Android mobile application development, as it has only been a few years since the first Android device was released, and it has already evolved into such a complex piece of technology.
At that point, it did not even compare to the popular iPhone, but then again, that was only the first version of the Android device. Since then, the advancements have brought new meaning to the Android name. Following the G1 was the Donut, otherwise known as the Android 1.6, followed by 2.0 closely after, and here we are today with version 4.2 Jelly Bean that implements brand new camera features. "So," you may ask, "what's next?" Well, everyone is now waiting for version 5.0, coming in the near future.
Operating system - what hardware do you need?
You can make use of several different operating systems, such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS X to develop your Android mobile applications on. For the purposes of this tutorial, I use the Windows 8 operating system.
The following platforms are supported by Android:
- Windows 8 - 32 and 64-bit
- Windows 7 - 32 and 64-bit
- Windows Vista - 32 and 64 bit
- Windows XP - 32-bit
- Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later - x86 only
- Linux
If you use a 64-bit operating system, you must make sure it can handle 32-bit applications as well.
Making Sure Your App Won't Fall Over
Your users' phones won't necessarily just be running your application on its own - they will more than likely be doing other work behind the scenes, like downloading files or playing music from another app. You need to know the answers to questions such as these:
• Will downloading files affect my application?
• Will my app crash if a necessary Internet connection isn't available?
You need to know the answers to such questions - I call this thinking outside of your application boundaries.
All apps are not of the same standard - there are some excellent ones and some dismal ones, believe me! Before you go and broadcast your app to the world you need to make sure you know its limits. You need to know that it will continue to run when users navigate their way around the screen, or carry out routine tasks, otherwise the whole thing could be a bit of a flop.
iPhone Application Development
An Intel-based Macintosh computer with the latest version of Mac OS is required to get started programming your first iPhone mobile application. The iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) should also be downloaded for free by becoming a registered iPhone developer.
To start off, we will make the assumption that you have a background in object-oriented programming and a form of C language like C++ or C#.
The first step you must take is to find an idea for a great iPhone mobile application. Let's say you have an idea for an application to calculate your net-worth in Euros or a data-driven application that helps find the best sandwich joint in Philadelphia. Your next step is to think about the best iPhone mobile applications and what makes them overshadow other applications. What steps are taken while clicking through that application that will seamlessly get the user to the perfect sandwich in the city?
Testing your Application on real devices
To test your application, all you need to do is to start it up and check all its features.
In order for you to be able to test your new application on your iPhone or iPad, you have to be registered on the iOS developer programme and you must have a developer certificate installed onto the device you are using as well. This is one of the biggest problems that developers have come across but Apple have this in place for security reasons - they say that all applications have to be digitally signed and this can't be done without joining the developer program.
Objective-C and Cocoa
The iOS application development uses the Objective-C, a superset of ANSI-C, with a Smalltalk-style syntax, the language most normally used. You will be able to become skilled at Objective-C rapidly if you have written in any current programming language (such as C++, Java, or even PHP).
The combined name given to the frameworks made available by Apple for the OS X and iOS application development is Cocoa. Cocoa will be used throughout this book to signify the iOS-specific APIs.
Creating an Engaging User Experience
iPhone mobile apps are incredibly easy to download and this is yet another important factor of why apps are so popular with businesses and individuals.
But it's not just about the fact that the mobile application you need is ready-to-run right there on your phone; it's (as important) about how the mobile application is designed and implemented. It has to be able to function smoothly and in an ideal world requiring minimum input from you as possible once it is up and running.
Therefore, having the app is one just one part of the story, though having an optimally designed app is something else. These first two elements are about what I describe as content - what an application actually does.
For instance, a tourist guide application may have a brilliant user interface, for example, but the downside is that it may not provide me the most current information, or inform me exactly when a my delayed flight is leaving from New York

Computers Are A Part Of Modern Life

Over the years, the image of the computer and those that use them has improved greatly, which shouldn't be much of a surprise. The computer industry has grown quite dramatically over the years, which has pushed people to want to go out and purchase one given all the benefits that it comes with. Regardless of how old or young the people in the home are, having a computer is certain to make things easier, which is always a good thing.
It's very easy for you to see why the modern computer is able to impact young people so positively. Being able to access the internet ensures that you have access to almost limitless knowledge, enabling the younger generation to be able to take up interests in things that are not within their immediate vicinity, in addition to it being able to help children complete their homework and certain projects.
It's also fair to say that there has been a large number of younger people that have been able to develop their personal skills due to playing educational games on their computers. There are a lot of people that believe computer games are solely for entertainment purposes, but the reality is that there are many games that have much more to offer. In fact, there are tons of people that have benefitted from these educational programs, helping to develop their minds.
As a child gets older, being able to access a computer will help them to learn and develop their personal skills in a working environment. It's also possible for them to use the internet to improve their communication and conversational skills, helping making them a more balanced individual with knowledge of the greater world around them. There are some obvious differences between talking to someone in the real world, and talking to someone on the internet, but being able to do both can help you to develop as a person.
Computers are also capable of making life better for families. With spreadsheet programs for example, a family can setup their budget or an email client can be used to keep in touch with family members on the other side of the world. The best thing about communication through email is that it can be done over a substantial period of time, as both parties do not have to be online at the exact same time. When you factor in the amount of stress and the pace of modern existence, using the internet to communicate does make things feel somewhat easier.

Voice Technology in Warehouses

Only a week ago I was watching the movie Ironman on television. The billionaire entrepreneur Tony Stark was down in his lab building and modifying his new Ironman suit. As his aides, Tony had a host of machines that he commanded and told what to do using nothing but his voice. As I watched this I thought to myself, this is more Hollywood fantasy, technology hasn't come this far. However upon thinking about this, I realized we weren't that far away and that voice technology is something we are embracing more and more. You don't have to look past your iPhone equipped with Siri or Samsung using S voice to see that speaking to machines is not confined to a Hollywood studio. Upon looking into this more, I discovered that voice technology isn't just used occasionally in phones to find the nearest restaurant, but instead is incorporated in the running of entire factories and vastly improves productivity through the use of applications such as Speakeasy.
The application Speakeasy by Wavelink allows pickers in large warehouses to know where to go, how much of which item to pick and where to take it. Traditionally, pickers would carry around a piece of paper with the items required for picking written upon it and would have to attempt to drive a forklift whilst not losing their place on the paper. Once finished, a picker would have to individually mark off the items they have picked. Already from this it becomes evident that the picker does not have his hands free throughout this process and it becomes very easy for them to lose their place or make a mistake as well as even on occasion hit something whilst reading where to go. For this reason, Wavelink's Speakeasy voice technology has been implemented into some warehouses with great all round success
With this technology, all pickers wear a headset and have a small computer screen with a barcode scanner attached to their forearm thus leaving both hands free for driving the forklift and picking up items. In the headset, they can choose the language they want the voice to speak in and they will be able to interact with it making it much easier to multitask and thus improving efficiency. The Speakeasy application will inform the picker of where they need to go to get the next item via a voice in the earpiece. The picker has many options such as asking to hear the location again, asking to speak slower or louder and so forth. Once at the location, the picker will then scan a barcode and Speakeasy will confirm whether or not they are at the right location, thus eliminating any error of picking the wrong item. It will then tell them how much of the item they should pick. Once the picker has successfully loaded these onto the forklift, a process that is made easier by the fact that they aren't holding around a paper and pen, they will simply ask for the next item. Upon reaching the final item, Speakeasy will inform them that they have picked everything in this batch and tell them where to deliver it to.
The use of voice technology is something we are embracing more as improvements to it are made. With the progression of technology, machines are able to understand language with a greater degree of accuracy making voice technology a viable option for the future. As more people turn towards voice technology, we will see greater improvements and innovations made in this field. Who knows, one day in the future you may be having a deep philosophical discussion with your television - only time will tell
